While there is no safe level of lead, Vermont children continue to be exposed. Young children are particularly vulnerable to lead as it has permanent effects on their developing brains. The primary source of lead exposure is lead-based paint in pre-1978 housing and surrounding soil.

Free Press: Advocates plea to be spared budget cuts
Published January 23, 2009MONTPELIER, Vt. — A day after Gov. Jim Douglas called for a wide-ranging round of cuts to the state budget, advocates for groups ranging from children’s services to land conservation said Friday those cuts would be devastating and need to be avoided.
