Babies with low birth weight—under 5.5 pounds—are at risk of respiratory conditions, cognitive and developmental delays, and long-term conditions. In Vermont and nationwide, this problem has been increasing steadily. The Healthy Vermonters 2010 objective is to reduce the percentage to 5.0%. In 2007, the Vermont average was 6.2%.

Published April 4, 2008Lead, a highly toxic element, continues to poison children in Vermont. Despite more than a decade of active interventions, which have substantially reduced the incidence of lead poisoning, approximately 300 children in Vermont are reported each year to have blood levels at or above the present level of concern.
