Vermont children continue to be exposed to lead and there is no safe level of lead. Young children are particularly vulnerable to lead as it has permanent effects on their developing brains. The primary source of lead exposure is lead-based paint in pre-1978 housing and surrounding soil.

Despite more than a decade of active interventions, which have substantially reduced the incidence of lead poisoning, approximately 300 children in Vermont are reported each year to have blood levels at or above the present level of concern.
